In this interview, Stas Louca, Founding Partner and Managing Director at H+A, shares insights into the studio’s evolution, the vision behind the Advanced Diagnostic Oncology Center (ADOC) in Sharjah, and how innovative design is transforming the future of healthcare delivery across the GCC.

Since its inception, H+A has grown from a small, focused practice into one of the region’s most respected specialist healthcare design firms, with a portfolio that spans the GCC and beyond. From the outset, our vision has been clear — to elevate the standards of healthcare environments through design that is intelligent, evidence-based, and human-centred.
Our evolution has been shaped by a deep understanding of how healthcare is changing — from hospital-centric models to integrated systems of care that prioritise accessibility, technology, and patient experience. By staying closely aligned with these shifts, H+A has been able to consistently deliver design solutions that not only respond to today’s needs but anticipate the demands of tomorrow.
What has truly driven our success is our specialisation and focus. Rather than broadening into unrelated disciplines, we have chosen to refine and deepen our expertise within healthcare — especially around the Oncology developing a nuanced understanding of clinical workflows, operational efficiency, and the emotional and psychological dimensions of healing environments.
This focus has allowed us to bring exceptional value to our clients and to build enduring relationships based on trust and performance. On the boards at the moment is a new state of the art diagnostic and oncology centre, the expansion of Kings College Hospital, and a super clinic located in Dubai.

The Advanced Diagnostic Oncology Center in Sharjah is being described as a landmark in the region’s healthcare landscape. Can you tell us about the vision behind ADOC – how the project came about, what it aims to achieve, and what it represents for H+A’s approach to human-centered healthcare design?
The Advanced Diagnostic Oncology Center (ADOC) represents a milestone not only for Sharjah’s healthcare landscape but also for H+A’s ongoing commitment to human-centered and purpose-driven design. From the outset, the vision behind ADOC was to create a facility that redefines the experience of cancer diagnosis and treatment — one that combines advanced medical technology with an environment that supports emotional wellbeing, dignity, and hope.
The project was conceived through a close collaboration between the client, clinical experts, and our design team, with a shared goal of bridging the gap between high-technology care and human empathy. We wanted to challenge the conventional notion of oncology spaces as purely clinical and instead design an environment that instils calm, confidence, and a sense of control for patients and their families.
Every aspect of the Center — from the spatial planning and flow of patients to natural light, materiality, and wayfinding — was informed by the principle that the built environment has a measurable impact on healing and psychological resilience. The result is a facility that not only supports clinical excellence but also embodies compassion through design.
For H+A, ADOC stands as a symbol of our philosophy: that healthcare design must go beyond functionality and performance to address the human condition at its most vulnerable. It demonstrates how architecture can help transform the care experience — making innovation and empathy inseparable components of modern healthcare delivery.
ADOC combines cutting-edge technologies, from AI-enabled diagnostics to advanced radiotherapy, with a deeply empathetic design philosophy. How do you and the team balance innovation with the human experience to ensure technology enhances care?
At H+A, we believe that technology and empathy are not opposing forces — they are complementary drivers of better care. In the design of the ADOC, this philosophy was central to every decision we made. The challenge was not simply to accommodate cutting-edge technologies like AI-enabled diagnostics and advanced radiotherapy, but to ensure that these innovations were integrated seamlessly into an environment that remains deeply humane and emotionally supportive.
Our approach begins with understanding the journey of the patient and clinician, not just the equipment requirements. We map the physical and emotional flow of each stage — from arrival to consultation, diagnosis, and treatment — and use this as the framework upon which the technology is layered. This ensures that innovation serves people, not the other way around
In ADOC, technology operates almost silently in the background, enabling precision, efficiency, and safety, while the human experience defines the space. Natural light, intuitive circulation, privacy, and moments of calm are carefully designed to reduce anxiety and restore a sense of normalcy. We view these emotional and sensory aspects as equally vital to healing as the most sophisticated medical systems.

ADOC sits within the wider Sharjah Healthcare City masterplan. How do you see such integrated healthcare ecosystems transforming access, collaboration, and care outcomes across the UAE and GCC?
Sharjah Healthcare City (SHCC) is a dedicated healthcare-free zone and integrated healthcare ecosystem based in the Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. It was established to drive investment, innovation and expansion in the healthcare sector — both regionally and internationally.
Sharjah Healthcare City reflects a regional shift toward integrated, ecosystem-based healthcare rather than standalone facilities, fostering collaboration, shared services, and more efficient care pathways. Its structure as a healthcare free zone promotes innovation in facility design, digital health, and patient experience by providing an environment that supports research and advanced clinical integration. For design firms like H+A, SHCC represents a forward-looking platform that aligns architectural and strategic thinking with the UAE’s broader ambitions to advance healthcare quality, investment, and service excellence.
The Advanced Diagnostic Oncology Center directly complements the Sharjah Healthcare City (SHCC) ecosystem by serving as its flagship specialized facility and establishing the benchmark for integrated, patient-centered cancer care in the emirate. As the first Centre in Sharjah to offer comprehensive oncology diagnostics and treatment within a single facility, ADOC operationalizes SHCC’s vision of creating a healthcare ecosystem that unites advanced technology, clinical excellence, and accessibility.
By combining AI-enabled diagnostics, precision radiotherapy, and evidence-based design within a connected urban healthcare framework, ADOC enhances the region’s capacity for early detection, multidisciplinary collaboration, and seamless patient referral pathways. In doing so, it transforms SHCC from a healthcare investment zone into a living model of integrated care, aligning medical innovation with human experience and setting the foundation for future facilities within the masterplan to follow a similarly holistic approach.
Colocation in healthcare brings multiple complementary services and specialties together within a single, integrated environment, enabling seamless patient journeys, stronger clinical collaboration, and more efficient use of shared resources. By housing diagnostics, treatment, and support services side by side, it enhances communication between teams, reduces duplication, and shortens the time between diagnosis and care delivery.
This proximity also fosters innovation through knowledge exchange and supports scalable growth as new technologies and services are introduced. Healthcare is changing fast, so how did you approach designing a facility that’s adaptable to evolving technologies and models of care, while embedding sustainability and operational resilience from the start?
Designing for healthcare today means designing for change. From the outset, our approach to the ADOC was to create a facility that could evolve as technologies, clinical practices, and models of care continue to advance. We achieved this by prioritising flexibility and future-readiness at every level — from spatial planning to building systems. The layout supports modular growth, allowing diagnostic and treatment areas to be reconfigured or upgraded without disrupting operations. Building services and infrastructure were designed with capacity and redundancy in mind, ensuring that new equipment or digital systems can be integrated seamlessly as technology advances.
Equally important was embedding sustainability and resilience from the start. We focused on efficient energy performance, intelligent building management, and materials that balance durability with wellbeing — creating spaces that are not only functional but restorative. Natural light, controlled air quality, and intuitive circulation contribute to a healthy environment for both patients and staff. Operational resilience was also central to the design: we worked closely with clinicians and engineers to ensure continuity of service under varying conditions, whether clinical, technical, or environmental.
In essence, ADOC was designed not as a static building, but as a living system — one capable of adapting to future medical, digital, and environmental demands while maintaining the integrity of its purpose: delivering exceptional, compassionate care.
Wellness seems to play a central role in H+A’s design philosophy. Can you tell us more about the wellness-driven architectural principles applied in ADOC, and how these elements tangibly impact recovery and wellbeing?
Wellness has always been at the heart of H+A’s design philosophy — not as an aesthetic layer, but as a fundamental design principle that shapes every decision we make. In the Advanced Diagnostic Oncology Center, this philosophy guided us to create an environment that supports physical, psychological, and emotional wellbeing for patients, families, and staff alike.
We approached wellness through the lens of human experience. Natural light, views of nature, and a calm material palette help reduce stress and anxiety, while intuitive circulation and clear wayfinding foster a sense of control — something especially important in oncology settings. Waiting areas and treatment zones are designed to feel dignified and private, balancing openness with comfort. Acoustic design, temperature control, and air quality were equally prioritised to create a space that promotes both healing and concentration.
Beyond the sensory and spatial aspects, ADOC’s design encourages a culture of care. Staff zones are designed for wellbeing and efficiency, recognising that caregiver health directly influences patient outcomes. The overall composition of the building — from its proportions to its daylight strategy — was informed by evidence-based design principles that link environment to recovery, demonstrating that good architecture can actively contribute to healing.
Ultimately, ADOC embodies H+A’s belief that wellness is not a feature — it is an outcome of thoughtful, empathetic design. Every element, from layout to light, was conceived to help people feel calmer, safer, and more hopeful — turning a place of treatment into a space of restoration.
